Lilac 94 is an award-winning contemporary harp duo comprised of harpists Christina Brier and Kathryn Sloat. As the Wilmington Star News writes, “Christina Brier and Kathryn Sloat aren’t your grandmother’s harpists. [They] hit their soundboards, pound their harps with mallets, slap their strings, and generally make a ruckus.” Lilac 94 performs throughout the United States and Canada. In 2019, the duo will present the Canadian-premiere of Freude from Karlheinz Stockhausen’s 21-hour cycle Klang at the Montréal Nouvelle Musiques Festival. The duo’s name reflects its origins at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where the lilac is the city flower and 94 is the number of strings between their two harps.
